What you need to know to make a informed decision about moving insurance.
Do you need moving insurance?
It’s difficult to decide if you need to purchase insurance or take the risk. Furniture damage is a real concern though. A moving moving company will take good precautions, although damage can still occur. Moving items within the home is a risk as well. Wall scratches and gouges may happen. Moving trucks and tractor-trailers on property is also another risk to the outside of the home. They may cause lawn marks and/or driveway damage. It’s important to know in Massachusetts, the carrier is not liable for these risks.
What are some of the important facts about moving insurance?
- Moves within Massachusetts are regulated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities. Inter-state moves are regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. In both instances, carrier liability is limited to $.60/lb/item
- If items are not marked on the bill of lading, there is a 15 day window for moves occurring within Massachusetts to complete and post-mark the claim submission form. After this window, employees and/or agents of this carrier are unable to assist you. For inter-state moves, the window is 9 months. After this time, the employees or agents of the carrier are unable to assist you
- In the event that goods are damaged, please mark the damage on your bill of lading before the movers leave. Carrier will refund $.60/lb/item. (Example 100lb dresser = $60 refund)
Exactly what does moving insurance cover?
You’ll find different moving insurances cover different things. It’s important to read thru all of the fine print as there could be loop holes that do not cover damages properly. Please note, in Massachusetts many moving companies offer you insurance when you purchase moving services. Read thru the paperwork carefully – it may be in your best interest to seek an independent insurance agency instead!
Where can I buy moving insurance?
Some movers may offer full value protection insurance, however, these policies have high deductibles and many exceptions. (Please note, movers cannot provide insurance. They can only play middle man between the customer and its own insurance company.) The moving company is encouraged to up-mark on the pricing so there is a profit on the sale of the policy. If you are interested in purchasing insurance – it may be less expensive thru an independent insurance company. The coverage most likely will be better too.
What company offers gives the best moving insurance
Most likely the liability offered to you by a moving company is not suitable. It may be best to seek “Goods In Transit Insurance” coverage through an independent insurance company.
How do I protect myself?
It’s smart to make an itemized inventory list with actual replacement values and submit to an insurance company for a competitive quote on “Goods In Transit Insurance”.
